CURTIN, ELIZABETH FRANCES

A mass of Christian burial was held Aug. 9 at St. John the Baptist Church, Jersey City, for Elizabeth “Betty” Frances Curtin, 70, of Jersey City. She passed away July 31. Born in Jersey City to Frank and Mary (Dougherty) McCarthy, she was a lifelong resident. Upon graduating from St. Mary’s High School, Jersey City. Betty worked at Western Electric, Kearny, for almost 10 years. She helped run the family-operated, McCarthy’s Candy Store in Jersey City. After staying at home with her children, she worked for the Superior Court of New Jersey, Special Civil Part for 18 years before retiring in 2008. She was a lifelong communicant of St. John the Baptist Church, where she was actively involved.
Betty loved spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren. She will always be remembered as a generous and kind woman who her life to helping others. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Thomas Curtin; her brother, Francis “Sonny” McCarthy; and her sister, Marie Van Dyk. She is survived by her daughter, Kelly McDow and her husband, Matthew of Aberdeen; her son Thomas Curtin of St. Mary’s, Georgia; one sister, Anne Nierstedt of Jersey City; her brother and his wife, Thomas and Helene McCarthy of Toms River; and a sister-in-law, Isabel Maurice of Lebanon; three grandchildren, Harley LeBlanc, Zachary McDow and Tyler McDow; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
