JERSEY CITY – A shooting took place at the corner of Corbin and Pavonia avenues on Saturday night shortly after 10 p.m.
This reporter, who was inside a building at this intersection at the time, heard the incident and heard five shots fired in rapid progression, followed by a sixth shot moments later. An argument between several men was also overheard. Neighbors who were sitting outside their homes on Corbin Avenue said they saw four men engaged in a dispute that turned violent as two men allegedly began chasing two others who ran up Corbin in the direction of Broadway.
Jersey City Police Department officers and detectives who were investigating on the scene had no comment about what took place.
One Pavonia Avenue resident said one man appeared to have been hit by at least one gunshot and was taken away in an ambulance.
This isn’t the first violent incident in this area. Two weeks ago, armed robbers broke into a Sikh temple in the immediate area and stole cash. Several members of the temple were inside at the time of the robbery. No one was injured in that incident.
While the JCPD has increased car patrols in this community in recent months, these incidents have left some residents shaken.
“Crime in the area is getting worse,” said one Corbin Avenue resident who witnessed Saturday’s shooting with his family who was sitting outside their apartment building. “You have to move out.” – E. Assata Wright
