HUDSON COUNTY — Another wrench has been thrown into the plans for the inaugural Grand Prix of America road race, scheduled to be held in Weehawken and West New York in June 2014 — but officials believe that this recent matter won’t really affect the event.
Formula 1 chief Bernie Ecclestone has been formally indicted in a German court on bribery charges. Ecclestone, who has played a key part in lobbying for the reintroduction of auto racing to the region, is alleged to have paid a $44 million bribe to a German banker in connection with the sale of a 47 percent stake in F1 to CVC Capital Partners.
But some think the race will not be affected at all by the recent development.
“We don’t expect it will have any effect on our race,” said Alex Howe, a spokesman for the race sponsor, Port Imperial Racing Associates, in an article in the Hunterdon County Democrat yesterday.
The race, originally scheduled to be held last month, was postponed until 2014, and will be run on the streets of Weehawken and West New York, near the waterfront.
