The New Jersey Scholastic Football Coaches Association’s 34th Annual North-South All-Star Classic was held last Monday night at Kean University and the first Weehawken player to ever grace the game certainly didn’t disappoint.
Damian Corredor received eight carries for 48 yards, helping the North squad to the biggest lopsided victory in the history of the All-Star Classic, as the North defeated the South, 54-8. The 54 points was the highest total ever tallied by one team in the three decades of the game.
Corredor, who is headed to play at Kean in the fall, was a key running back and receiver out of the backfield for the North. It was a great way for Corredor to get ready for college.
Former St. Peter’s Prep center Joe Stevenson was also on the North squad and got to enjoy a victory in his last high school football game, much like Corredor.
It was the final time Corredor represented Weehawken before he heads off to college, leaving a legacy of excellence as the greatest all-around athlete in the school’s history…
North Bergen state championship wrestler Anthony Giraldo, who became only the second wrestler in the school’s history to capture a state title when he won the 126-pound NJSIAA championship in Atlantic City in March, has made his college decision known.
Giraldo, the Guttenberg resident, announced last week that he has accepted a scholarship to continue his wrestling career at Rutgers University after he completes his senior year in 2014.
Giraldo chose Rutgers because he wanted to stay close to home and get a chance to compete at the highest level…
Former St. Anthony point guardJio Fontan, who was part of the magical Friar team of 2008 that was featured in the award-winning documentary, “The Street Stops Here,” was invited to work out in front of the Brooklyn Nets front office prior to this week’s NBA Draft.
Fontan, who started his career at Fordham and then transferred to the University of Southern California, is the second player from that great senior class to get a workout with the Nets this summer. Fontan’s close friend and former teammate Travon Woodall also received a tryout with the Nets this summer. A third teammate, Tyshawn Taylor, is already on the Nets’ roster…
Former Memorial standout softball player Kayla Calderon has announced that she is transferring to Bloomfield College, where she will play for head coach Rocco Constantino, a Jersey City native. Calderon will be a good fit for the Bloomfield program…
Lincoln High School football player Daisjon Robinson continues to watch his stock rise. Robinson, who is a two-way lineman, but much better on the defensive side, made his presence felt at a recent Rutgers University camp for top prospects. It’s reported that Robinson just might get a scholarship offer off his sensational performance there…
Congrats to the Seton Hall University men’s and women’s basketball teams, who came to Jersey City last weekend to participate in the fifth annual Walk for Team Walker Foundation. The two-mile walk took place along the Jersey City waterfront, with all the proceeds of the fundraising walk going to help Team Walker’s after-school programs in Jersey City.
Team Walker was founded by former St. Anthony and Seton Hall basketball great Jerry Walker, who recently ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Jersey City. It was great that the Seton Hall players gave of their time to help the worthy cause…
North Bergen native Greg Herenda, the new head men’s basketball coach at Fairleigh Dickinson University, has reached into his Hudson County roots to get two quality assistant coaches.
First, Bruce Hamberger, who spent the last five seasons as an assistant coach at St. Peter’s University, was named as Herenda’s associate head coach. And Dwayne Lee, the Jersey City native who played at St. Anthony and later St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, was hired as a full-time assistant coach.
Both were excellent hires for Herenda as he begins his new career at FDU…
It was a nice gesture that the Jersey City Boys & Girls Club was presented with a banner proclaiming all the great basketball players that came from the club and went on to play both high school and college basketball. Now, the banner hangs outside as a permanent history lesson for all entering the facility in downtown Jersey City…
The annual St. Anthony summer basketball camp will take place once again, under the leadership and guidance of director Ben Gamble, at the METS Charter School on Ninth Street, from Aug. 5-9 and Aug. 19-23. The camp is open to boys and girls, ages 8-14. Legendary head coach Bob Hurley will be there for the first week and former Friar greats Myles Mack, Lucious “Lucky” Jones and Jerome Frink are expected to serve as camp counselors.
