Registration Begins for Library Summer Programs

Mayor Nicholas J. Sacco, the Board of Trustees, and Library Director Sai Rao have announced that the North Bergen Public Library’s summer programs will run from July 8 through Aug. 23.
Registration begins Monday, June 17 at 9 a.m., and is open to North Bergen and Guttenberg residents. Interested parties should register in person, and must bring proof of residency and age. Go to www.nbpl.org for a list of programs.
“Stay tuned for the launch of the library’s new website and downloadable mobile app,” said library spokeswoman Krista Welz.

Flag Retirement Program under way in three towns

The North Bergen Veterans Alliance is sponsoring its American Flag Retirement Program, which accepts used flags to be retired in a “proper, dignified manner,” according to an alliance spokesman.
Four sites, in the towns of North Bergen, Guttenberg and West New York, will accept the flags during regular business hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The sites and contacts are:

North Bergen: 64th Street Recreation Center, 6300 Meadowview Ave., Digger O’Dell; or Department of Public Works Garage, 6100 Tonnelle Ave., Ed O’Neill;
Guttenberg: Police Headquarters, 6808 Park Ave., Capt. Joel Magenheimer; and
West New York: Miller Stadium, 57th Street & Bergenline Avenue, Ken Furlong.

Little Miss Schuetzen Seeking Entrants

The 47th Annual German-American Little Miss Schuetzen Park Beauty Pageant is seeking applications for this year’s contest. The pageant is open to girls ages 7 through 12 years old and who are of Germanic, part Germanic, or Swedish heritage.
The pageant will be judged in Schuetzen Park, North Bergen, on Sunday, Aug. 18, at the celebration of the annual Oktoberfest in August Folk Festival.

Rebeka Verea observance on Thursday

On Thursday, June 20, at 9 a.m., West New York Mayor Felix Roque and the town’s Board of Commissioners will commemorate the life and memory of Rebeka Verea with a ceremony on Rebeka Verea Way, 56th Street and Park Avenue in West New York, in front of Memorial High School.
Verea was killed in a car accident on June 20, 2005 on West Side Avenue in North Bergen, only hours after her graduation from Cliffside Park High School.
