Contractor saws through water main; street closures in effect

HOBOKEN – The city suffered from a water main accident on the corner of Newark Street and Jackson Street Thursday afternoon, said city spokesman Juan Melli. A contractor who is working on installing a new county traffic signal at the intersection was sawing through the asphalt when he accidentally hit the main around 2 p.m. this afternoon.
Due to the incident, various road closures and detours were in effect Thursday: Monroe Street was closed south of Observer Highway, Newark Street was closed east of Monroe Street, and Jersey Avenue was closed north of 18th Street in Jersey City. Drivers were urged to avoid Southwest Hoboken and enter or exit via northern Hoboken, or if necessary, to use Grove Street and Marin Boulevard, said Melli.
According to Melli, United Water is on the scene and will be isolating the main in order to conduct repairs.
