Dear Editor:
As active downtown Jersey City residents, we want to share why we support Steven Fulop for Mayor, Candice Osborne for Ward E Council and Fulop’s three At-Large candidates, Daniel Riviera, Joyce Waterman and Rolando Lavarro.
All of these candidates on the Fulop Team share community activism in so many areas of city life. Like us, they have made meaningful and effective community involvement part of their lives and responsibilities for many years. Sadly, the same cannot be said for Mayor Healy and his slate of candidates, including former schools superintendent, Charles Epps.
But don’t take our word for it.
We urge you to look at the current administration’s record. A record that includes 35 out of 45 failing schools and corruption, which has cost our city dearly in so many ways. As Jersey City residents well know, campaign talk at election time is only as good as the record it represents.
Unlike their opponents, Steven Fulop’s slate represents integrity, intelligent policy and dedication to the people of Jersey City – not political pals and corporate interests. Candice Osborne, for one, brings to the table business acumen as a manager at a leading global web company and a passion for her community. Unlike Mayor Healy, she took the initiative to recruit and lead 800 volunteers to help residents recover from Hurricane Sandy. Candice gained national acclaim for co-founding Jersey City Sandy Recovery, a relief organization in her free time while our full-time mayor was noticeably absent during this crisis. Clearly, Candice shares the same energy, keenness of mind and eagerness to clean up Jersey City that our future mayor, Steven Fulop has brought to his office during these last seven years.
Rolando Lavarro, our current Council-At-Large, brings integrity and intelligence to city council. His dedication and hard work have set the standard for the position of Council-At-Large. Council-At-Large candidate Reverend Joyce Waterman was born and raised in Jersey City and graduated from William L. Dickinson High School. Joyce worked at the former Jersey City Medical Center for more than 13 years and is dedicated to making Jersey City a better place for all. She currently works as a licensed realtor.
Daniel Rivera, life-long resident of Jersey City and U.S. Marine Corps veteran is also a Council-At-Large candidate. He is past president of the Roberto Clemente Little League of Jersey City, the largest in New Jersey, with more than 700 boys and young men. Danny gets involved in young athletes’ lives to help them persevere in school, home and in life.
Unlike Mayor Healy and his slate, these are candidates who put people first. Please join us in voting for all of them on May 14 so that together we can work toward making Jersey City an even better place to work and live.
