Mayor Mark A. Smith has announced that the Bayonne Division of Recreation will host a free Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit and Run Competition for the youth of Bayonne on April 15 and 16 at 6 p.m. The competition will be held at Veterans Stadium. Date and time are subject to change.
Mayor Smith stated, “This grassroots program is designed to provide youngsters with an opportunity to compete, free of charge, in a competition that recognizes individual excellence in core baseball skills.”
The pitching category will consist of competitors throwing pitches at a designated strike zone target. The hitting category will consist of competitors hitting from a stationary tee for distance and accuracy. The running category will consist of competitors running from second base to home plate for time. The hit and run events use conversion tables to convert distance and time into a composite point total.
Competitors are divided into four age groups: 7 and 8; 9 and 10; 11 and 12; and 13 and 14. The competitors have the chance to advance through four levels of competition, including team championships at Major League ballparks and the National Finals at the 2013 MLB All-Star Game.
The individual pitching, hitting and running champions, along with the all-around champion in each age group at the local competition, will be awarded and advance to the sectional level of competition.
All participants must fill out a registration and waiver form prior to the start of the competition. You may pick up registration forms at City Hall in Room No. 13. You may also register at the event. All registration forms must be returned to City Hall. A Copy of participants’ birth certificates are required if the participant advances to the following round.
