KAHRER, EDWARD J. Sr.

A mass of Christian burial was held March 12 at St. Anthony’s of Padua RC Church for Edward J. Kahrer, Sr., 82, of Shadow Lake Village, Red Bank, formerly of Jersey City. He passed away on March 6 in Naples, Fla. Ed was born in Jersey City to the late Frederick and Nora Kahrer. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Roseanna ‘May’ (Leishman), and his three sons, Edward Jr. (Terri) of Hazlet, Michael (Lorraine) of Cranford, and Mark (Francine) of Hasbrouck Heights, his grandchildren Leann, Matthew, Alexandra, Michael and Kristen. His brother, Donald preceded him in death. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Eleanor Kahrer and brothers and sisters-in-law Patricia (Leishman) Gual-tieri, Vincent and Anne Leish-man, and William and Margaret (Leishman) Dolan as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Ed lived for over 60 years in Jersey City, where he was very active at St. Nicholas Church serving as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister and in leadership roles on the Liturgy Committee, Holy Name Society, and Parish Council. He was honored as an ‘Outstanding Parishioner.’ Ed was Vice President of the Sparrow Hill Social Club/John ‘Chuck’ Meagher Association and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He also was a coach of the Pershing Field Little League. Ed was a graduate of St. Michael’s High School Union City. He joined PSE&G in 1949, progressing from a union apprentice to become a Substation Maintenance Supervisor. He retired in 1991 after a 42 year career. He also served in the U.S. Naval Reserves.
Upon retirement, Ed and May moved to Shadow Lake Village in Red Bank where he was active in the Lakers Golf group, the Socializers, the Kiwanis and recently the Elks. He and his wife were also active at Saint Anthony’s Parish in Red Bank, chairing the Liturgy Committee as well as serving as Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers. Services arranged by the John E.
