GOMEZ, BERNABE RAOUL SANCHEZ

Funeral mass was offered Feb. 11 for Dr. Bernabe Raoul Sanchez Gomez, 99. He was born in the municipality of Havana, Cuba. He graduated from the University of Havana with a Doctorate in Pedagogy. In January of 1935, Bernabe was appointed rural teacher in San Cristobal, Province of Pinar del Rio, and worked there until the end of 1939, he was subsequently appointed Inspector of rural schools, which covered the following municipalities: San Cristobal, Candelaria de los Palacios and retired on June 6, 1959.Bernabe was an athlete for 20 years as a hammer thrower. At the Central American Games celebrated in EL Salvador, he placed third place and in Panama first, as well as the fourth place in Guatemala, he also attended those games held in Mexico. He was initiated in the Masonic brotherhood ‘Hijos de Antonio Maceo’; there he occupied the posts of Treasurer, First and Second Guard as well as the Venerable Maestro.
Bernabe arrived in the United States with his wife Virtudes and daughter Consuelo, both predeceasing him. They all belonged to the Golden Club of San Rocco’s church. Bernabe served as a teacher in the Catholic school Don Bosco located in the city of Paterson. He joined the Masonic lodge ‘Miguel Teurbe Toulon’ of West New York. He lived in the city of Weehawken, and despite his advanced age maintained a prodigious memory. Services arranged by the Morgado Funeral Home, Union City.
