HOBOKEN — A building at 72 Madison St. and the one next to it were heavily damaged in a blaze on Sunday afternoon, officials said. One resident was treated for smoke inhalation.
The fire started around 3 p.m. Witnesses told various media outlets that they heard a bang, possibly from a propane tank in back of one of the houses.
On a cold, windy day, residents were sent to a shelter at the Connors School two blocks away.
Several homes on the street were evacuated, and the cause of the fire is being investigated. It was under control by 4 p.m.
