Rest in peace, Sam Manzo

To the Editor:

An era in the history of Hudson County law enforcement ended with the sad news of the passing of Saverio “Sam” Manzo who, for over 50 years, operated Sam Manzo Uniforms in Jersey City. Sam served police departments from all over the county and he did so with pride that all officers looked their best while serving the public.
As former Deputy Director of the Jersey City Police Department and Sheriff of Hudson County, I had the honor of interacting with Sam in his business and we always ended our conversations with a laugh in regards to life itself. As one goes through the road of living, the most important areas of family and health are paramount, and this is what I had the good fortune of sharing with Sam after the official business was conducted.
It is to be noted that Sam would have his own honor system of trust, never used credit cards in his business, and would never refuse an officer the availability of a uniform if he or she did not have the funds readily available. His kind heart and feeling for people was transparent in his daily living.
Sam, you will be missed by all of the people for many years to come, and we know that right now you are fitting some fallen officer for a uniform and the rewards to you for all of your life’s kindness will be eternal. May you rest in peace.
