Deli takes trophy for best mutz

HOBOKEN — The first ever “Hoboken Mutz Fest” was held on Sunday at the Elks Club, and M&P Biancamano took home some bragging rights.
Hosted by the Hoboken Family Alliance, the event not only sold out, but turned away people in droves. The event pitted five Hoboken delis against one another to see who had the best fresh mozzarella cheese. Hoboken is known for its handmade white mutz.
Competing were M&P Biancamano, Vito’s Deli, Lisa’s Deli, Losurdo Brothers Bakery, and Fran’s Deli.
The event allowed the public to cast votes, which made up the People’s Choice vote. A panel of three judges also gave a Critic’s Choice prize.
The People’s Choice winner for Best Mutz was decidedly M&P Biancamano. The critics also chose Biancamano.
However, the critics also decided they wanted to carve out a new category of best sandwich. That honor went to Vito’s Deli.
Both delis are on Washington Street.
