West New York to celebrate the founders of Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico

The Town of West New York will celebrate the lives of Juan Pablo Duarte, Eugenio María de Hostos, and José Martí this month by awarding several prominent figures in Latino culture for their achievements in the founders’ honor.
Three recipients will be honored during a ceremony held at West New York Middle School surrounded by local student artwork dedicated to the three founders of the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Cuba. The ceremony will take place on Jan. 25 at 6 p.m.
Young performers from West New York’s Amarilys Academy will present attendants with native Cuban and Dominican dances, and the 13-year-old West New York winner of the 2012 New Jersey Performing Arts Center competition will play el cuatro (a Venezuelan guitar).

Union City City Hall unveils new art gallery

City Hall was scheduled to open a new art exhibit at a ceremony Friday evening, Jan. 18.
The art exhibit features artists Gustavo Braga, Alcinda Sapina, Irene Nunez, Renee Nascimento, and Marcos Amaro. The gallery was spearheaded by Union City’s art gallery curator, Amado Mora, and the Union City Artist Collective.
The Union City Gallery at City Hall is dedicated to giving local artists a free space to showcase their art as well as to continue the city’s mission of encouraging more art in the City and improving the quality of life of all its residents. The Gallery will feature different artists in monthly exhibits.
The entire community is invited to visit the gallery. Support art, local artists, and help beautify our community.

Registration for free performing arts classes in Union City to begin Tuesday

The Grace Theatre Workshop, Inc. will be holding registration for its professional arts training program for children ages 8 and over Monday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Jose Marti Freshman Academy, 1800 Summit Ave., Union City. Registrations begin on Tuesday, Jan. 22.
Free dance classes will be offered in ballet, hip hop, salsa, tap/rhythm. Additionally, classes in singing and acting are also offered. Students are free to sign up for as many classes as they’d like.
To register, children must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. All classes are FREE. No special clothing or equipment needed. Registration fee is $30 per student. All of the instructors are professional performers. Open to all residents of Hudson County.
Adult classes in salsa are also offered at no cost.

Hudson Riverfront Performing Arts Center announces first concert of 2013

The UBS Atrium Series will present its first concert of the new year, featuring the Cosmopolitan Chamber Trio on Wednesday, Jan. 30 at 12:30 p.m. The Hudson Riverfront Performing Arts Center (HRPAC) presents this series of free lunchtime concerts in the Atrium at 1000 Harbor Boulevard in Weehawken.
The Cosmopolitan Chamber Trio is comprised of three exceptionally talented virtuosi – violinist Eric Grossman, pianist Gleb Ivanov, and saxophonist and composer Russell Peterson. Collectively they have won numerous prizes and awards and appeared at many renowned venues around the world. They will collaborate on a program of great diversity and interest, featuring the New Jersey premiere of Mr. Peterson’s own trio for saxophone, violin and piano. Another highlight will be Sweet Cecimar by Cuban composer Jorge Lopez Marin. Pieces by Maurice Ravel and Dmitri Shostakovich will round out this afternoon of masterful music-making.
