SECAUCUS AND BEYOND – A 62-year-old man jumped off the Route 3 West Hackensack River Bridge in Secaucus last week in an apparent suicide attempt and survived, according to police. The incident happened the morning of Friday, Dec. 28.
The man, whose identity and town were not disclosed by the police, drove and parked his vehicle in the right lane of Route 3 West Hackensack River Bridge, immediately exited the vehicle, and jumped off a portion of the bridge that was a little over 100 feet over the water, according to Secaucus Captain Det. John Buckley.
A construction worker who had access to a boat was in the area and was able to rescue the man from the river. The EMS responded and transported the man to an area hospital with “minor” non-life threatening injuries.
“Considering the height of the fall, he is a very fortunate man,” said Buckley.
Buckley said that the man listed a number of residences and that the police could not determine his exact domicile.
“Maybe he is homeless,” said Buckley.
No charges of any kind were issued by the police.
