WEEHAWKEN — After the hurricane forced a postponement of some peewee championship games, they’ve started to resume, including a championship game for Weehawken’s team.
Mom Linda Barr O’Flanagan wrote the following:
After the hurricane decimated the league schedule, organizers met Sunday to draw up a battle plan that would allow at least some of the youngsters to see out the season. With towns like Little Ferry crippled by Sandy, it was decided that both the junior and senior leagues would be scrapped.
But the plucky Pee Wees will play for the League Championship on Friday (Nov. 16) and, as number one seeds, Weehawken has a great chance to bring home the trophy.
“After such a horrible two weeks, we really wanted to give the kids something to look forward to,” said coach Nadyr Albri.
Weehawken will face Englewood in the final, which will be played in Fort Lee on November 16. The team of seven-to-nine year olds already has the American Conference title under its belt and has dominated the league this season with impressive wins over Little Ferry, Ridgefield and Secaucus.
Coach Albri – who has trained the Peewees in the Bi-County Junior Scholastic Football League for the past four years – led his players to an Amercian Conference win last year and is upbeat about Friday’s game.
“These are great kids and, after everything that’s been going on these past few weeks, I know they will be out to grab some glory on Friday,” Albri said.
“I hope the town comes out to cheer them on and we come home with something to smile about at long last.”
The game against Englewood will be played at the Fort Lee football field on Stillwell Ave. at 6 p.m. Nov. 16. For details, go to www.leaguelineup.com.
