Memorial services were held Oct. 6 for Cecilia Dorothy Whitehouse, 91, of the Villages, Howell Township. She died Oct. 1 at home. Born in New York City, she lived on the West Coast and in Weehawken prior to moving to Howell Township 19 years ago. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of California, Los Angeles; and a Master’s of Science Degree from Columbia University.
She worked as a fashion editor of the ‘California Stylist’ in Los Angeles before returning to New York to study and then work as an editor and reporter in the New York City bureau of United Press. After that, Mrs. Whitehouse was a teacher at Weehawken High School in 1960, Memorial High School in West New York in 1961, and at North Bergen High School from 1962 to 1986, teaching English, Journalism, Creative Writing, and Composition. In 1980 she was named Hudson County teacher of the Year by the Commissioner of Education.
She served as editor of The Villages monthly magazine, and served on various committees, including Township Liaison committee, and as a trustee of Friendship Gardens and Crossroads senior citizen homes in Howell Township. She was predeceased by her husband, William A. Whitehouse. Surviving are a daughter and son in law, Signe Anne and Gary Timm, Long Beach, Calif.; a son and daughter in law, William C. and Mary Elizabeth Whitehouse, Howell Township; and two grandchildren, William Charles Whitehouse and Leigh Elizabeth Whitehouse.
