Pet Fair & Parade and Heirloom Garlic Festival are today (Sunday)

The Hoboken Museum’s eighth annual pet fair has been re-scheduled for Sunday Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. due to rain last week. The event will take place at the Maxwell Place Pier near 12th Street and will feature costume contests, talent competitions, and more than 20 local pet service providers. The event will also offer a low-cost microchip clinic sponsored by the NJSPCA, for just $25. The first 100 attendees will receive a free gift bag from event sponsors and admission is free.
After the Pet Fair is an event for foodies, the Heirloom Garlic-Tasting Festival, from 1 to 5 p.m. The event features garlic and other fresh produce brought in from Wantage by farmers Sue and Rich Sisti. The varieties of flavors are preserved from plants brought over from the old country. For more info call (201) 656-2240.

Youth lacrosse free clinic is today

There will be a free youth lacrosse clinic on Sunday Oct. 14 at Mama Johnson Field at Fourth and Jackson streets. The event is sponsored and staffed by the Northern NJ Youth Lacrosse League. The schedule for boys and girls is as follows: K thru second grade is at 11 a.m., third and fourth grade is at noon, fifth and sixth grade is at 1 p.m. and seventh and eighth grade is at 2 p.m. Sticks are provided.

Baby wanders into A&P alone

A toddler wandered into the A&P at 614 Clinton St. alone around 11 p.m. Wednesday, crying. Store officials searched for the child’s parents and notified Hoboken police. The DYFS (Division of Youth and Family Services) was later notified and the child was taken to the hospital in an ambulance around 11:15 p.m.
According to Sgt. Sam Williams, the parents were later found in the 600 block of Willow Avenue, which runs parallel to Clinton, one block away. The parents were asleep and said the door was not secured and the baby left. The child then crossed Willow and Clinton streets by itself.
No charges have been filed against the parents.

Hoboken Art Exhibit to help orphan children in Kenya

An art exhibit will run from Saturday Oct. 13 to Sunday Oct. 21 at Gallery 1200, 12th and Washington St. It will feature paintings from S.K. Duff, art teacher and director of Service-Learning at Hoboken Charter School and professional artist. The exhibit is being held in order to help bring clean water and sanitation to orphan children in Kenya.

Register for special needs children fall programs

Registration for fall programs began on Saturday Oct. 13 for children with special needs. Young children with special needs who would like to start preparing to compete in the Special Olympics are invited to join the Young Athlete Program. Mama Johnson Field ribbon cutting is Oct. 18

The Mama Johnson Field ribbon cutting ceremony in Hoboken will take place on Thursday Oct. 18 at 4 p.m. at 400 Harrison St. The ceremony will be joined by a resident appreciation day. Festivities for residents and visitors will run from 3 to 6 p.m. The rain date for this event is Oct. 23.The original date for the ribbon cutting was Oct. 9 but due to weather delays, the completion of the project took longer than expected.

Rebuild Hoboken Charter School benefit will be Oct. 29

A benefit and auction to rebuild Hoboken Charter School will take place Monday Oct. 29 from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at the W Hotel, 225 River Street. The event is $90 per person and a portion of the ticket and auction items are tax deductible. Tickets are available online at www.HCS-PA.org. Alcoholic beverages are courtesy of Sparrow Wine and Liquor Company.

Parenting workshop scheduled

A workshop on Tuesday Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Mustard Seed School, 422 Willow Ave., Hoboken, titled “How to Make Power Struggles Optional and Obsolete” will be hosted by AOL/Huff Post Parent’s parenting expert Susan Stiffelman. It will teach parents to come alongside their children and teens, reduce defensiveness, and awaken a child’s willingness to compromise. The event is free but RSVP is requested at www.mustardseedschool.org to reserve space.

Fall gala is themed a hoedown!

The Hoboken Historical Museum will be hosting a country-themed fall gala on Saturday Nov. 10 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Hoboken Elks Lodge, 1005 Washington St. Tickets are $125 and include an open “saloon,” food by Anthony David Catering, desserts from Giorgio’s Pasticceria, mile square dancing, a pie bake off and a mystery wine wall.
