A prayer service was held Sept. 17 at Ascension Greek Orthodox Church in Fairview for Elpis A. Markou, 91, of North Bergen. She passed away Sept. 13. Elpis was born in Kalogera, Cyprus. She loved her country of birth and immigrated through Ellis Island to her new home, America, and became an American citizen. Before retiring, Elpis had worked as a seamstress for Cottage Coats in North Bergen and enjoyed her hobbies, which were sewing, cooking and gardening. She was predeceased by her husband, Andreas with whom she celebrated 50 years of marriage.
She was the mother to Christopher Markou and his wife Ellie, Markos Markou and his wife Virginia, Maria Kakolyris and her late husband Angelo and Christal Stull and her husband Joseph; grandmother to Xenia, Angelo, Vanessa, Andrew, Christopher and Alexander; and great grandmother to Effie Elpida and Evan. Elpis was a mother and grandmother, and esteemed by family and friends, her gentle and kind spirit will be greatly missed and always and remembered. Services arranged by the A.K.
