HOBOKEN – The City Council meets tonight to consider two measures that would change the appearance of Washington Street, the city’s major business thoroughfare, and Church Square Park, one of the oldest recreation areas in Hoboken.
The council will vote on a $1 million bond ordinance that could jump start the redesign of Hoboken’s landmark streets. Bustling Washington Street and scenic Sinatra Drive could receive upgrades, mainly intended to improve the pedestrian experience, and Observer Highway, a major entry route into the city’s downtown that often jams during rush hour, would be transformed into a tree-lined boulevard with traffic improvements.
Also, after receiving community input, the council will vote on whether to approve recently-finalized plans for improvements to Church Square Park, one of the city’s most popular open spaces. If the plans receive the required five votes, the Zimmer administration hopes to award a contract for construction by mid-September.
The council meets at City Hall, 94 Washington St., at 7 p.m.
