TOSTA, GILBERT

A funeral mass was offered Aug. 9 at Saint Mary’s Church, Jersey City, for Gilbert Tosta, 88, of Jersey City. He passed away Aug. 2 at Christ Hospital, Jersey City. Born in Santa Rosa de Copan, Honduras to General Vicente Tosta, former president of Honduras, and Julia Tabora, he immigrated to the United States in 1952. Before moving to the United States, he married the love of his life, Marina, to whom he was married to for 61 years.
Gilbert was a United States Merchant Marine. He was an operating engineer with the Jersey City Public Schools prior to retiring. Once retired, he and his wife enjoyed traveling. A community activist, Gilbert was a founding member of PREP, active with PACO, and started the Honduran Club of Jersey City. He was a member of the Legion of Mary at Saint Mary’s Church, and was a devout parishioner of Saint Peter’s Church, Jersey City, prior to its closing. One of Gilbert’s proudest achievements was sponsoring many family members and friends in becoming American citizens, allowing them to follow in his footsteps.
Surviving Gilbert are his wife, Marina (nee: Carranza), his children, Lorena Zuber (Robert), Marilyn TostaDavila (Luis), Gilbert Tosta, Jr., and Nelson E. Tosta (Norma), his ened siblings, Jose Tabora, Ramon ‘Moncho’ Contreras, and many other siblings residing in Honduras. Gilbert will especially be missed by his grandchildren, Melissa Miller, Maritza Fuget, and Robert Zuber, Jr., and his three greatgrandchildren, Alyssa Nicole Harrison, Tyler Joshua Fuget, and Ashton Benton Miller.
