Temple Emmanuel to host blood drive
Every 2.5 seconds someone needs blood, and blood donors participating in the Union City Community Blood Drive and Health Fair in cooperation with Community Blood Services will help to ensure that the transfusion needs of area patients are met.
The drive will be held Sat., Aug. 4 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is sponsored by Temple Emmanuel at (Peru Park) located at 24th Street between West Street and Central Avenue. To schedule an appointment, please call Community Blood Services at (201) 251-3703.
All blood types are needed, especially Types 0- and 0+. Any healthy individual, age 17 through 75 (16 with parental permission) who weighs at least 110 pounds can donate blood. Donors should eat a moderate meal before donating and must bring identification showing signature.
All donors receive complimentary non-fasting cholesterol and glucose screening with every blood donation.
Weehawken Seniors Club seeks new members
The Weehawken Senior Citizens Club is looking for new members. They meet on the first and third Friday afternoons of each month.
Why not come and spend a couple of hours in an air conditioned room, and visit with your old friends? Refreshments will be served, a “Share the Wealth” drawing will be held, and games will be played.

NY Waterway Ferry waives bicycle surcharge
NY Waterway Ferry encourages ferry and bike riders to take full advantage of the 5th annual Summer Streets NYC, presented by the New York City Department of Transportation, as it waives its usual $1.25 bicycle surcharge.
During Summer Streets, nearly seven miles of New York City’s avenues will be closed to auto traffic and open for everyone to play, run, walk and bike on Aug. 4, 11, and 18 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., from Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park, along Lafayette Street and Park Avenue. NY Waterway Ferry is a convenient way for cyclists coming from New Jersey to participate in Summer Streets NYC.
Weekend service to the West 39th Street Ferry Terminal in Manhattan’s Hudson River Park is available from Port Imperial in Weehawken and 14th Street in Hoboken.

Library to offer discount museum tickets
The Weehawken Free Public Library is offering discounted tickets to the American Museum of Natural History. Each ticket will cost $6 and is redeemed for free general admission and one special exhibition, film or live animal exhibition of the purchaser’s choice.
The American Museum of Natural History, which is located at Central Park West and 79th Street in New York City, is one of the largest and most celebrated museums in the world.

Golf outing to benefit Weehawken Volunteer First Aid Squad
On Aug. 9, the Township of Weehawken will hold its seventh annual golf outing, and the proceeds will benefit the Weehawken Volunteer First Aid Squad. There will be activities and dinner included for both golfers and non-golfers at the Wild Turkey Golf Course in Hamburg.

On July 17, Coldwell Banker Real Estate LLC released its new “Best Places to Live” five-part series in partnership with Onboard Informatics, ranking the top United States places for lifestyle categories: Social Seekers, Suburbanites, Adventurers, Leisure Lovers and Culture Cravers.

HRPAC presents Cyro Baptista’s Beat the Donkey
On Wednesday, Aug. 15, Hudson Riverfront Performing Arts Center will host Cyro Baptista and his group Beat the Donkey at Lincoln Harbor Park at 7 p.m. The rain date, if necessary, will be the following night.
Baptista is one of the world’s greatest percussionists and has created a one-of-a-kind, madcap musical show that incorporates percussion, tap dance, Samba, Jazz, Rock, and Funk.

Weehawken Weekenders to hold trips in summer, fall
On Aug. 12, the Weehawken Weekenders will visit Magnanini’s Winery in Wallkill, N.Y. for a wine tasting, dinner, and dancing, for $75.
On Oct. 3, they will attend “Octoberfest” at the Royal Manor in Garfield, for $45.
On Oct. 13, they will visit the Nordic Lodge with all you can eat lobster and more in Charlestown, R.I. and proceed to Mohegan Sun Casino, for $125.

Child advocate volunteers wanted

Legal Services of N.J. offers free or low cost divorce advice
While the U.S. Census recently reported that New Jersey has the lowest rate of divorce in the nation, experts say one reason is that the cost of a divorce in the Garden State is so relatively high. And for low-income people, as well as many other locals caught in broken marriages or failed civil unions that are beyond repair, the cost of a divorce is an especially daunting barrier.
Legal Services of New Jersey (LSNJ) has published a brand new version of its popular manual, “Divorce in New Jersey: A Self-Help Guide,” that instructs people – step by step – on how to do their own divorce, especially if the issues are not complicated.
The publication is free for qualified low-income people eligible for Legal Services assistance. All others can secure the print edition of the 275-page manual for $50; the digital edition is $25.
