BAYONNE — Mayor Mark A. Smith announced that this summer’s Avenue C paving project will resurface the avenue from West 42nd Street to West 49th Street. Preliminary work will begin on or about Tuesday, July 31 weather permitting.
A grant of $401,500.00 from the Fiscal Year 2012 Municipal Aid Program of the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will cover almost all of the cost of the $427,731 paving project. Smith said, “The city of Bayonne is grateful for this state grant, which will enable us to continue our effort to resurface Avenue C. We are giving special attention to upper Avenue C, which has needed to be repaved for many years. Motorists have complained about the long rut on Avenue C that PSE&G left after completing utility work many years ago.” Smith continued, “This Avenue C paving project is just the latest in our administration’s ambitious efforts to improve the quality of our streets. We will continue to seek additional grants to repave the other uptown portions of Avenue C.”
The repaving schedule for Avenue C from 42nd Street to 49th Street calls for the reconstruction of sewer inlets on Tuesday, July 31, and Wednesday, August 1. That will be followed by the installation of metal curb pieces on Thursday, August 2. Concrete curbing and handicap ramps will be installed on weekdays from Tuesday, July 31, to Tuesday, August 7. The existing street surface will be milled and removed on Wednesday, August 8, and Thursday, August 9. Paving will take place on Friday, August 10, and Monday, August 13. Striping (line-painting on the street surface) is scheduled for Friday, August 10, and Monday, August 13. The schedule is subject to change, due to inclement weather and other unforeseeable events.
Traffic on Avenue C will remain open throughout the project with some restrictions. “No parking” and various construction signs will be posted as needed. The contractor will distribute construction notices in the affected areas. Police officers will assist with the flow of traffic and pedestrians during construction. Work is restricted to the hours between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
English Paving is the contractor for the resurfacing. Statewide Striping, the only sub-contractor for this project, will handle the striping. T & M Associates is the engineering firm for this contract. The schedule calls for completion of the project by Thursday, August 30, at the latest, in order to avoid interfering with the start of the new school year in September.
Smith thanked Assemblyman Jason O’Donnell of Bayonne and other members of the New Jersey Legislature for supporting the Transportation Trust Fund, which helps pave streets in Bayonne each year.
