Fire breaks out in Union City after apparent lightning strike

UNION CITY — A fire broke out at 32nd Street and New York Avenue when lightning apparently struck the private storage facility on the corner during the intense storm Wednesday afternoon, Union City Police Chief Brian Barrett said.
At around 6 p.m. he was still on the scene as firefighters were just putting out the fire that had spread up the block to a table and mirror company.
The department got the call when smoke was reported coming from the storage facility, Barrett said, but firefighters couldn’t find smoke actually in the building. They found the fire between the drop ceiling and the roof next door.
One firefighter was treated for shortness of breath but Barrett was unclear at the time whether he had been transferred to the hospital. No one else was reported injured, and no residences were affected.
Union City Mayor Brian Stack was at the scene as well.
“The fire appears to be under control at the moment,” Barrett reported. “We will know more details later.” — Gennarose Pope
