BUTLER, MARGARET

A mass of Christian burial took place June 29 at St. Mary’s Church, Deal, for Margaret ‘Peg’ Butler, 92, of Interlaken. She passed away peacefully at home on June 25. Peg was born and raised in Jersey City. She was a longtime member of St. Paul’s parish in Greenville. She worked for many years at Goodman’s Furniture store in Jersey City. She married Patrick J. Butler, a Jersey City policeman, in 1946. Together they devoted their lives to raising their family of nine children. After fifty years of marriage, Peg was predeceased by her husband in 1997.
Peg leaves to honor and celebrate her memory her brother, Reverend Matthew Torpey, OCSO, Monastery of the Holy Spirit, Conyers, Ga.; her children Thomas Butler (Natalie) of Metuchen; Patricia Bednarski (Gregory) of Rutherford; Susan DePalma (Fred) of Babylon, N.Y.; Nancy Esposito (Philip) of Parlin; Kathleen Merkl (Dr. Matthew) of Galloway; Joanne Butler of Interlaken; Donna O’Meara (Raymond) of Spring Lake Heights; Elizabeth Kameika (the late Thomas) of Holmdel; Matthew Butler (Tara) of Little Silver; her grandchildren: Mary Pat, Patrick, Jacqueline, Brian, Raymond, Meghan, Kaitlyn, Kaitlin, Emily, Kyle, Brian, Sean, and Tyler, her greatgrandson.
Always active in the church, Peg served on the parish council at St. Paul’s. She served two terms as president of the Mothers’ Club at St. Dominic Academy, from which her seven daughters graduated. Peg has been a communicant of St. Mary’s Deal, for thirty years, where she served as president of the Rosary Society, of which she was a longtime member. Peg was a great believer in daily prayer. When she learned of someone who was ill or suffering she would gladly add that person to her ‘list’ and say a prayer each day for help and healing. To the end, God’s grace shone abundantly from this gentle woman with each smile so readily bestowed. Services arranged by the Buckley Funeral Home, Asbury Park.
