BAYONNE/JERSEY CITY — U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood came to Global Terminals on the border of Jersey City and Bayonne bearing a federal grant for $11.4 million that will revamp the way the container port handles freight allowing cargo to be brought from ship to rail.
The money is part of a $350 million upgrade of the facility that will allow the New York region to handle the larger cargo ships even prior to the raising of the Bayonne Bridge. LaHood said this would greatly expand the existing operations while at the same time reducing the impact on the environment, but getting truck traffic off roadways. The move would also improve the safety of handling cargo, he said.
