A mass of Christian burial was offered June 15 at St. Mary’s Church in Jersey City for Francisca J. Vargas, 74, of Jersey City. She passed away June 9 at the Cusak Care Center in Jersey City, with her family at her side. She was born in Salcedo, Ecuador, and spent her childhood on her family’s farm in Anchilivi. She became a teacher and taught grammar school until she immigrated to New York at the age of 31. She worked in textile factories until she graduated as a nurse’s aide. She worked in a nursing home in the Bronx.
She resided in Jersey City for the past eight years but has been a part of St. Mary’s Parish in Jersey City for the past 20 years. She was active in fundraising and belonged to the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. She was the wife of Angel Vargas, the mother of Veronica Vargas Pineda and Robert Vargas, the mother in law of Edson Pineda, the grandmother of Gabriella and Danielle Pineda, and the sister of Ines Abad, Elsa Sevillano, and Galo Paez.
