I’m sure any Hoboken resident living near the corner of 4th and River Streets was aware of the late night street repaving that was taking place earlier this week. The sounds of jackhammers resonated into the wee hours of the morning, and were undoubtedly an inconvenience to most residents living in the area. While city officials addressed the issue relatively quickly, I would like to express my thanks to my neighbor and fellow committeeperson, Eileen Carvalho.
Eileen and I have served on the Hoboken Democratic Committee for several years now, representing the same voting district. I have always found Eileen to be an invested member of the committee, and her willingness to convey the concerns of her neighbors is what makes her such an effective committeewoman.
Prompted by the complaints of her friends and neighbors, Eileen took the initiative to contact the appropriate city officials, and express the dissatisfaction residents had with the late night road work. Eileen also took the time to inform her neighbors that the road construction would be rescheduled for a more amenable time once she received word from City Hall.
Since we are too often bombarded by the negativity that characterizes partisan politics, I believe examples of civic engagement like Eileen’s should be celebrated. Truly, the most helpful element to any local government is an engaged citizenry. Hoboken should always welcome and appreciate citizens like Eileen.
