SECAUCUS BRIEFS

Recent construction fall under investigation

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration last week issued a call for an investigation of four recent construction accidents in New Jersey, including the incident that occurred in Secaucus on May 18 when a man fell 45 feet from an aerial lift according to news reports. The 34-year-old man fell when the lift he was operating flipped onto its side at a construction site on Meadowlands Parkway. He suffered internal trauma when he struck the pavement in the second lane of Meadowlands Parkway at 10th Street. Arris Tunc of Clifton was still alive when emergency responders arrived and he was taken by ambulance to Hackensack University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Prieto Meadowlands preservation bill released by Assembly panel

Legislation that Assembly Budget Chairman Vincent Prieto sponsored to promote preservation in the Meadowlands and Hackensack River regions was released last week by an Assembly committee. The bill (A-2504) establishes the NJ Meadowlands Conservation Fund and provides for a designation on the state gross income tax return to permit taxpayers to make voluntary contributions to help support the work of the Meadowlands Conservation Trust.
“The Meadowlands Conservation Trust benefits land preservation in the Hackensack River and Meadowlands regions,” said Prieto (D-Hudson/Bergen). “The trust acquires land to permanently preserve wetlands, waterways and open space, offering flood protection, clean water, wildlife habitat and passive recreations. These are all vital to our quality of life, and I’m confident many New Jerseyans will lend a helping hand once we make it easier to do so.”
The bill was released by the Assembly Appropriations Committee and can now be considered by the full Assembly.

June movies at the Secaucus Public Library; no movies July and August

Free movies for Secaucus’ adult residents are shown at the Secaucus Public Library and Business Resource Center on most Tuesdays, beginning at 1 p.m. The movies are selected by Richard Gantzhorn, library technical clerk, and are shown on a large screen television in the second floor Panasonic Room. Light refreshments are also served.
The Tuesday movie program will be suspended for July and August, according to library director Jenifer May. “There are a number of children’s programs during the summer months that require the use of the Panasonic Room on Tuesdays,” said May. “The plan is to resume the movies in September and further information will be given at that time.”
The movies to be shown in June are as follows: June 5, “Contraband,” an R-rated action drama starring Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsdale, 110 minutes; June 12, “This Means War,” a PG-13 rated romantic comedy starring Reese Witherspoon and Chris Pine, 97 minutes; June 19, “The Gray,” an R-rated drama starring Liam Neeson and Dermont Mulroney, 117 minutes; and June 26, “Man on a Ledge,” a PG-13 rated drama starring Sam Worthington and Ed Harris, 102 minutes.
