Deirdra Grode appointed executive director of Hoboken Charter School

Following the recent renewal of the Hoboken Charter School’s charter by the State Department of Education, the school’s Board of Trustees has appointed Deirdra Grode Executive Director of its K-12 program.
The appointment of Ms. Grode, which was formally adopted by a majority vote on April 18, “confirms the Board’s commitment to a unified K-12 charter school as set forth in the school’s charter by its founders in 1997,” said Dan Weisz, president of the school’s Board of Trustees.
As Executive Director, Grode will be the school’s lead administrator and educator. In addition to her new role, which will take effect on July 1, Grode will continue to serve in her current position as principal of the K-8 division. Ria Grosvenor has been the high school principal since 2007 and will continue to serve in that capacity.
“This is a pro-active board that recognizes the importance of operating a single and robust K-12 institution as is clearly articulated in the school’s charter,” said Weisz. “The move to create an executive director position will have a profound impact on our ability to devise and execute an overarching strategy to unify the two divisions and better serve our entire student population, staff, parents and larger public community.”
The appointment of Grode comes on the heels of the state’s 15th year renewal of Hoboken Charter School’s charter, one of New Jersey’s first. Rigorous oversight and accountability standards from the Department of Education require charter schools to prove their effectiveness every five years.
Hoboken Charter School’s mission is to create a K-12 community of learners that seeks to develop the academic, artistic, personal and civic growth of all its members through its commitment to service learning and learner-centered education. The school is approved for an enrollment of 298 students: 22 at each grade level from K-8 and 25 at each grade level from 9-12. The current waiting list for admission to the Hoboken Charter School is approximately 476 students.
