Dangerous conditions on Tonnelle Ave.

Dear Editor:
It is not a pleasant shopping experience – not at all – and may be hazardous to your personal safety and your vehicle. I’m talking about shopping at the Walmart Plaza at 88th & Tonnelle Ave in North Bergen.
As soon as you descend upon the low-land basin of Tonnelle Ave., it becomes very apparent that any time of the day the traffic is jammed and there will be waiting, waiting, and waiting. And to make a left or right from oncoming traffic (at any exit or entrance, which at any time one or two of which will be closed) increases one’s percentage of vehicular accidents greatly. But the frustration is not over yet.
There is probably not one smooth ground of roadway under your tires for blocks (you better have good shocks on your car). Get ready for the bumpiest ride of your life at both egress and entrance at any of the two entrances/exits which pour into one lane of 1&9, one of Hudson County’s most congested and dangerous roadways.
If you ask me, there was very little planning done by the developers in the getting in and going out of this plaza. The recent ongoing road work of expanding 1&9 doesn’t seem to me to resolve any of the problems at this shopping facility. The state needs to come in and assess the entire entrance and exit accesses and make a determination that there needs to be many changes, way more than just road resurfacing. I recently read the statistics on the increasing number of vehicular accidents that have occurred since the opening of the plaza – and it’s very revealing that something drastic must be done.

Sincerely,
John Amato
