Three Weehawken Board of Education members elected Tuesday evening

Three Weehawken Board of Education members were voted in Tuesday evening, along with the district’s $23.6 million dollar proposed budget, with 77.86 percent of the vote counted. The nine members of the board serve three-year terms on a rotating basis.
Of the five candidates running, two were incumbent. Richard Barsa and Joseph Rutigliano have served on the board for over 20 years, and were up against new candidates Ildefonso Acosta, Gabrielle Jonas, and Greg Moran.
Out of 2,182 total votes counted as of late on election night, Richard Barsa came out on top with 667 votes (30.57 percent), Joseph Rutigliano came in second with 573 votes (26.26 percent), and Gabrielle Jonas came in third with 461 votes (21.13 percent) according to the Hudson County Clerk’s website. Gregory Moran came in fourth with 319 votes (14.62 percent) and Ildefonso Acosta came in fifth with 160 votes (7.33 percent).

Hudson Riverfront Performing Arts Center to hold annual benefit gala

The Hudson Riverfront Performing Arts Center, Inc. (HRPAC) will host its annual benefit gala at the Chart House Restaurant on Saturday, April 28 at 6 p.m. There will be a cocktail hour and silent auction, followed by a dinner and concert featuring vocalist Hilary Kole and her band.
Hilary Kole has headlined at Manhattan’s Blue Note and Birdland and performed and recorded with the likes of Michael Feinstein, Herbie Hancock, Dave Brubeck , Quincy Jones, John Pizzarelli, and Michel Legrand, to name a few.
Through its two concert series, Summer Concerts on the Hudson and the UBS Atrium Series, HRPAC has developed an excellent track record for bringing fine and diverse programming to the North Hudson region. HRPAC has additionally presented educational programs to thousands of students in eight of Hudson County’s school districts.
Over its nine year history, HRPAC has presented over one hundred concerts and shows, many of which have featured Grammy and Tony winning artists. These presentations, which are presented free of charge to the general public, have attracted thousands of fans from Hudson County and the New York metropolitan area. They are sponsored in part by the Hudson Reporter.

Tickets on sale for ‘A Taste of Weehawken’

Tickets for the 12th Annual Taste of Weehawken, which takes place this year on Tuesday, April 24th at the Food Court at Lincoln Harbor, go on sale this week at the Weehawken Library. Offering food enthusiasts the opportunity to sample the fare from dozens of area restaurants and food purveyors, proceeds from the popular culinary event help support the library.
This year’s event will also feature the return of special Wine Tasting tables hosted by Giannone Wine & Liquor Company.
Preview hour tickets are $55 per person for entry from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. General admission tickets are $30 per person for entry from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
All tickets may be purchased at the Weehawken Library located at 49 Hauxhurst Ave. with cash, check or money order only. Please note that tickets purchased at the door are subject to a $5 additional charge per ticket.

Weehawken team to walk for women

On Saturday, May 5, the Weehawken Hope and Cure team will participate in the 15th annual EIF Revlon Run/Walk For Women. Those who can’t join the walk can join the fight by making a pledge or donation on behalf of one of the team’s members.
Pledges will help fund important research into the cause and cure of women’s cancers, prevention, education and support service programs. One in three women will be affected by cancer in their lifetimes.

Weehawken Weekenders to visit Platzl Brauhaus

The Weehawken Weekenders will take a trip to the Platzl Brauhaus in Ponoma, N.Y. on Wednesday, June 20, for a day of fun, food, and entertainment. The day includes breakfast and lunch, followed by dinner at 4 p.m.
There will be music, dancing, and bingo, and there is a pool available for anyone who wishes to use it. The bus departs from the Weehawken Pathmark at 9 a.m. Tickets cost $70 and include all gratuities.

Weehawken Recreation to hold adult tennis lesson registration

Weehawken Recreation announces Saturday morning adult tennis lessons. Lessons will be held on Saturday mornings from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and will run for six weeks beginning on May 12. They will run through June 23. There will be no classes Memorial Day weekend. Total cost is $60 for the six-week session.

Weehawken to sponsor 26th Annual Lincoln Tunnel Challenge

The Township of Weehawken will sponsor the home team for the 2012 Lincoln Tunnel Challenge on Sunday, April 29.
The event will raise money for the Special Olympics of New Jersey for the 26th year in a row. Last year, the home team had over 80 members.
Weehawken residents interested in participating and joining the Weehawken Home Team 2012 must register online at lincolntunnelchallenge.sonj.org under the team name of “Weehawken Home Team 2012.” The team members will walk or run five kilometers through the Lincoln Tunnel.
There is a $25 registration fee payable online before April 19. Residents may also make an online donation in the team’s name. The registration fee or donation goes directly to the Special Olympics of New Jersey.

NJ Festival of Ballooning to hold statewide contest

PNC Bank and the Quick Chek N.J. Festival of Ballooning invite students in grades 2 through 12 to take part in the 9th annual PNC Bank American Patriot Essay Contest by writing a short essay on the topic “What the American Flag Means to Me.”
The largest summertime hot air balloon and music festival in North America will celebrate its 30th anniversary July 27 through 29 at Solberg Airport in Readington and will feature the PNC Bank American Flag balloon: the largest free-flying flag in the world.
This year’s Grand Prize winner will receive a visit to his or her school by a 75-foot-tall hot air balloon in June and a special VIP package at this year’s festival: a hot air balloon ride for two, four Blue Sky Club VIP tickets, and the opportunity to meet one of this year’s concert headliners, which have included the Jonas Brothers and Disney stars Demi Lovato and Emily Osment in the past.
Second and third place prizes will include festival admission and merchandise.
The winning student’s immediate classmates will each receive one complimentary general admission ticket to the festival and the winning student’s teacher and school principal will each receive two Blue Sky Club VIP tickets.
Every teacher in the state who submits a group of 15 essays or more on behalf of their students will receive two free general admission tickets to the festival regardless of whether one of their students submits the winning essay.
The essays should be 100 words or less. They will be judged by a panel of representatives from PNC Bank and the balloon festival. Winning essays will be selected based on creativity, poignancy and clarity with consideration given to the grade level of the contestant. Contestants are not required to be U.S. citizens.
Entries should include the student’s name, home or school address, home or school telephone number, grade, age, school name and the name of their teacher.
