Dear Editor:
In Union City, with Cal Ripken Ballfield’s coming expansion and the destruction of some trees in that section of Washington Park, I realized the need to compile a checklist of bird species. What impact will the loss of mature, old trees have on bird habitat? On March 21st, I began this compilation to coincide with the spring migration and would like to thank Hudson County park worker, Chris, for his help by informing me of the birds he has seen.
In addition, I would encourage residents to enjoy bird-watching and help me draw up the bird count for the park. It looks like a red-bellied woodpecker is excavating a nest in a sycamore limb near the tennis courts. You can easily spot me with field binoculars when I walk the park on my days off. I eventually will extend my range to include all of Union City in my bird count.
You are invited to join this effort.
A park shepherd,
Tony Squire
