Castellano leaving historic preservation board

Dear Editor:
For the past 30 plus years, I have had the honor and privilege to serve this city as a Historic Preservation Commissioner. I was then elected Chairwoman, and held that position for the better part of my tenure.
I was first appointed by Mayor Cappiello, re-appointed by Mayor Vezzetti, Mayor Pasculli, Mayor Russo, and Mayor Roberts. I thank them for the opportunity to serve.
Mayor Zimmer has chosen not to reappointment me.
Over the years, there were many commissioners who served. Many have come and gone, every one of them an asset to the board.
As my tenure comes to an end I must give honorable mention to the other longest standing commissioners, who have also not been re-appointed.
Joyce Tyrell, a math teacher, principal of Our Lady of Grace School, a Planning Board member for many years, Joyce has held many positions with the city and, being an educator, has been instrumental in moving the Hoboken school system in a positive direction.
Vincent Wassmen, veteran, committee person, devoted husband, father and grandfather, always involved in Hoboken activities. Vinny serves at all veteran affairs, he opens the ceremony with a prayer. Then he entertains us with his personal rendition of “It’s A Grand Old Flag” the segment of the ceremony we all look forward to.
Lenny Luizzi, city historian, veteran, committee person with his wife Marie, scout leader, husband, father and grandfather. If you have questions about the history of any section of Hoboken, Lenny is the guy you need to ask.
These commissioners have many other accomplishments too many for the space allotted. I thought it was important to note their dedication and service to the city they love.
Last year Washington Street (aka The Avenue) was named one of the 10 Best Main Streets in America by the American Planning Association, an honor we should all take pride in.
A warm heartfelt thank you goes out to all the commissioners I have had the privilege to serve with over the years and all the mayors who saw fit to appoint and re-appoint me over the years.
To the new board, my best wishes for continued success.
Please preserve the Hoboken we all know and love.

Regards,
Theresa Castellano
