Deer pursued through Bayonne streets

BAYONNE – A deer that may have emigrated from Staten Island was pursued through the streets by police and other public safety officials Thursday, stopping traffic while Animal Control officials tried to corner the animal.
With news helicopters whirling above the chase scene, police said they had cornered the animals in the back yard of a West 8th Street residence.
Officials, however, could not say how the animal came to be in Bayonne other than speculating that it came from the other side of the Kill Van Kull, crossing over on the Bayonne Bridge walkway.
Local animal rights people expressed concern for the safety of the animal, hoping that Animal Control could capture the deer alive.
Public Safety Director Jason O’Donnell said the city has already contacted the state Division of Wild Life to help capture the deer.
“This is not something we deal with every day and we do not want the animal hurt,” he said.
