April movies at the Secaucus Public Library

Free movies for Secaucus’ adult residents are shown at the Secaucus Public Library on most Tuesdays, beginning at 1 p.m. The movies are selected by Richard Gantzhorn, library technical clerk, and are shown on a large screen television in the second floor Panasonic Room. Light refreshments are also served. The April movies are as follows: April 3, “J.Edgar,” an R-rated drama directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Naomi Watts, 137 minutes; April 10, “My Week with Marilyn,” an R-rated drama starring Michele Williams and Emma Watson, 99 minutes; April 17, “War Horse,” a PG-13 rated drama starring Jeremy Irvine and Emily Watson, 146 minutes, and April 24, “The Iron Lady,” a PG-13 rated drama starring Meryl Streep and Jim Broadbent, 105 minutes.

Traditional African Glass Painting Workshops for youngsters and adults

Ibou Ndoye returns to the Secaucus Public Library and Business Resource Center on April 11 to host two workshops highlighting traditional African glass painting. At 3:30 p.m., Ibou will teach the art of glass painting to children ages seven and up. At 7 p.m. on that same day, adults are invited to learn the intricate art of glass painting. The evening program is also open to teens 16 and older. Born in Dakar, Senegal, Ibou combines modernism and traditionalism to create a style of glass painting that is unique to him. Free identity theft prevention April 7

Valley National Bank will host a free Identity Theft Awareness event on April 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Secaucus branch, located at 40 Meadowlands Parkway. Event partner Shred-it will provide an on-site truck to shred personal and confidential documents, at no cost. Residents from the community are encouraged to bring documents such as old bank statements, checks, income tax returns, credit card statements, etc., that can be shredded on-site, for free. Staff members will discuss effective measures that can be used to reduce the risk of fraud and identity theft. Special April Fools Bird Walk with the NJMC and BCAS

New Jersey Meadowlands Commission and the Bergen County Audubon Society host their first Sunday-of-the-month guided walk on April 1 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst. The walk has an added twist. Other than birds, people can identify any decoys they see along the way. Winner receives a prize. The group will also walk around other sections of the square-mile-park, looking for spring arrivals, Bald Eagles and other birds. The walk starts outside the Meadowlands Environment Center. State Fair Meadowlands returns this summer

State Fair Meadowlands, New Jersey’s largest annual family friendly event, is set to return for 17 days of “everything-under-the-sun” fun this summer, running from June 22 through July 8 at the Meadowlands Fairgrounds, next to the Met Life Stadium in East Rutherford. This year’s fair will feature free entertainment, rides, games and food for all ages. The fair includes the State Fair Kid Zone, an amusement area for children; the new Live Shark Experience show; and fireworks shows on July 3 and July 4.
State Fair Meadowlands is the largest fair in the New York metro area, with over 150 rides and attractions occupying over 35 acres of fairgrounds and parking. The fair will have rides for everyone, from tots to thrill-seeking daredevils, games, shows, live concerts and shopping. Also at the fair will be the original Batcopter, which will provide rides offering panoramic views of the fair and nearby New York City.

Fair hours are Monday through Thursday, 6 p.m. to midnight; Fridays from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m., and Sundays from 2 p.m. to midnight. Special hours on July 3 are 4 pm to 2 am, and on July 4, 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. On Friday, June 22, opening night, gates open at 4 p.m. This year, the fair is offering free parking Monday through Wednesday, and $4 all other days, including July 4.
