Dear Editor:
I had to laugh when I read the recent article by Stephen LaMarca on the ever growing traffic problems on Tonnelle Avenue. The situation is indeed serious, but the town officials’ reaction to it is laughable and not in a good way.
First there was the remark by Mayor Sacco who states that a left hand turning lane into Wal-Mart would solve some of horrendous traffic and car accident problems in the area. But he blames the state for not finishing the left turn lane in time for the opening of the shopping mall. First of all I doubt the left turn lane will solve much of the problem. Cars are backed up on the street for blocks and a left turn lane handling 12 cars is not much of a help.
Secondly, Sacco and his troops continually tell us that one of the benefits of having a mayor who is also a state senator is that he has power to get things done for the town in Trenton. Well in this case he seems powerless to help us and his attempts to blame the state for the town’s poor planning is laughable. He is the state.
No matter how the town officials want to spin the over development issue along Tonnelle Avenue. It’s still poor planning on the part of the town – not the state. There is too much development crowded into the town without regard for the quality of life of our residents. And that’s not a joke.
