UC Board of Commissioners to present land use and zoning plan
Union City Mayor Brian Stack and the Board of Commissioners will present their new land used and zoning plan at a formal hearing on Wed., Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. at Jose Marti Freshman Academy, located at 1800 Summit Ave.
The renewed master plan and land use policy was written by interested residents who wished to serve on either committee and who collaborated to create the new policies.
Formula One names president and chief operations officer for local 2013 race
Formula One officials selected Tom Cotter, a 30-year motorsports veteran, as president for the Grand Prix race set to hit the streets of West New York and Weehawken in 2013. Former NJ Sports and Exposition Authority CEO and President Dennis Robinson was selected as chief operations officer.
Cotter served as director of public relations at Charlotte Motor Speedway for four years before he built The Cotter Group between 1989 and 2001. The company became one of the most successful motorsports marketing communications agencies in the world.
Robinson served as senior vice president of business and league operations for the National Basketball Association before he became president and CEO of the NJ Sports and Exposition Authority (NJSEA) in 1998. He also oversaw the Giants, Jets, Devils, Nets, and Metrostars and contributed to the campaign to bring the Superbowl to the Meadowlands in 2014.
Formula One Grand Prix of America has planned its first race in the area for June 2013. The race will receive no local or state government subsidies and is anticipated to bring millions to New York and New Jersey each year. It is also anticipated to generate many millions in economic development.
The 3.2-mile race will run on existing Weehawken and West New York streets, and over 100,000 people are expected to attend each race. The teams will practice on Friday, qualify on Saturday, and race on Sunday. Local streets will be closed only for the race and reopen before and after.
Formula One currently hosts 20 races annually in 19 countries, and the local Grand Prix of America headquarters will be shared between Weehawken’s Port Imperial and Manhattan.
WNY Recreation Cheerleaders to hold Winter Fest and Adult Game Night
The WNY Recreation Cheerleaders planned to celebrate “Winter Fest” on Saturday, Jan. 21 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Memorial High School Gymnasium at 5501 Park Ave.
They will also hold Adult Game Night as a fundraiser on Jan. 27 at 8 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus at 111 60th St.

UC Mobile City Hall to visit Kennedy Blvd. Wednesday
Mayor Brian Stack and the City of Union City’s Mobile City Hall will be visiting Roosevelt School at 4507 Hudson Ave. on Tuesday, Jan. 24 between 6 and 8 p.m.

Cuban Lions Club to celebrate birthday of José Martí
The West New York Cuban Lions Club will celebrate the 159th anniversary of the Cuban Apostle from Jan. 26 through 29.
On Wednesday, Jan. 25, the Meson Madrid restaurant at 343 Bergen Blvd. in Palisades Park will host a reading of “The Golden Age” and the Cuban Lions will present its annual New Pines award from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
On Saturday, Jan. 28, the Lions will give away a set of furniture and clothing to the first baby born at the Palisade Medical Center in honor of the anniversary of the Cuban poet José Martí.
On Sunday, Jan. 29 at 12:30 p.m., the Lions will make a floral offering to the bronze bust of José Martí locate at 54th Street and Boulevard East in West New York.

WNY Town Hall to host celebration of José Martí
On Friday, Jan. 27 at 4 p.m., the town of West New York will celebrate the birthday of Cuban patriot José Martí in the Court Chambers of Town Hall at 428 60th St. The mayor and the Board of Commissioners will present a José Martí award, present readings of his poetry as well as other entertainment. Cuban food will be served.

Registration to be held for free performing arts classes
The Grace Theatre Workshop, Inc. will hold registration for its professional theatre training program for children ages 8 and up from Monday through Thursday, Jan. 23 to Feb. 3 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Jose Marti Freshman Academy, 1800 Summit Ave., Union City.
The workshop will provide free ballet, jazz, hip hop, salsa, tap/rhythm, singing, and acting classes.
To register, children must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Registration fee is $25 per student, but classes are free and open to all Hudson County residents. All of the instructors are professional performers. Adult classes in Salsa dancing are also offered at no cost.

Union City to open new art exhibit
The Union City Museum of Art will host the opening reception for Craig Radhuber and Abby Levine’s new art exhibit entitled “All Too Human” on Friday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. at the William V. Musto Cultural Center located at 420 15th St. The artists will be in attendance, there will be live jazz music by the James Austin Trio, and refreshments will be served.
Admission to the event is free, and everyone in the community is invited to attend.
