Punch leaves Newark man with S-shaped nose, police say

A 23-year-old Newark man was punched so hard in the face on New Year’s Day at 2 a.m. that, police said, his nose was left in the shape of an S.
Police responded to a report of a fight involving five to six individuals near 15th and Hudson streets when they found the 23-year-old man with a bloody nose, according to police. Many of the people involved in the altercation were related, police said. The argument started in a nearby 14th Street bar, but the group was asked to leave by the security staff, according to police. The conversation eventually turned violent, police said, and the man suffered a punch in the nose, allegedly by a future in-law.
However, no criminal charges were filed by the victim.

Homeless man allegedly pushes coffee shop employee

Maybe he just wanted to work on his novel?
A homeless man in a downtown coffee shop allegedly pushed a female employee on Dec. 28 at 5 p.m. after she told him he couldn’t sleep there after purchasing a coffee, according to a police report.
A Newark Street coffee shop worker called police after the alleged altercation, but the man had already left the store, according to police.
The employee told police that the man had come into the store several times, and he always falls asleep on the table, according to a police report. When she told him he couldn’t sleep there, the man allegedly screamed and pushed the woman, according to police.
The woman said she would sign a criminal complaint if he is identified, and police advised her to call the authorities if the man returns.

Spent too much last night?

A 44-year-old Union City man was arrested for theft of services after he allegedly couldn’t pay his $11.15 bill at a downtown Hudson Street diner on Jan. 1 at 8:40 a.m., according to police.
The man tried to pay his bill on his credit card, but the card was declined, according to police. He then said he would go to a nearby gym where he was owed money – but they told him to come back on Monday, according to police.
The owner of the restaurant said he signed a criminal complaint because it isn’t the first time that this has happened, according to a police report.

Man’s laptop taken from bus on Christmas Eve

Someone got a surprise Christmas present at the expense of a 27-year-old Hoboken resident.
A Hoboken man left his bag containing a $1,700 laptop and $100 passport on the 126 bus travelling from New York City to Hoboken when he exited near Sixth Street on Dec. 24 at 10:15 p.m., according to police. After realizing that he left the bag on the bus, the man walked to the last stop in downtown Hoboken to retrieve the bag. However, when he searched for his laptop bag on the bus, it was missing. Police are investigating.
The driver said 12 people had exited the bus since the Sixth Street stop, according to police.

Car stolen on 800 block of Grand Street

A 1999 silver Honda Civic was stolen from the 800 block of Grand Street some time between Dec. 16 and Dec. 23, according to police.
A Hoboken woman said she parked her car on Dec. 16, and returned on Dec. 23 to find the vehicle missing. The car was not in the municipal tow yard. Police are investigating.

Hoboken man’s car moved spots overnight, police say

A Hoboken man said he parked his car on the 300 block of Eighth Street on Dec. 21, and then found it a few blocks away the next morning.
On Dec. 22 at 9 a.m., the man called police to say his car had been stolen. However, when they drove him around town, it was found at 817 Washington St., police said. It is not known who moved the vehicle.

Car stolen, Club left behind

A 59-year-old Hoboken man reported his vehicle stolen on Dec. 22, two days after he parked it on the 100 block of Harrison Street.
The man’s car had been stolen before, so he installed The Club, a steering wheel anti-theft device, according to police.
The man found The Club on the ground in the area, but the car was gone.
Police are investigating the incident.

Christmas morning fight leads to arrest of two Union City residents

That loud noise in the hallway wasn’t Santa Claus.
On Dec. 25 at approximately 1 a.m., police responded to the report of a noise complaint on the 1100 block of Adams Street.
One resident told police that a group had been making noise in the hallway outside his door, and after an altercation began between the resident, his wife, and the alleged noisemakers, the incident turned violent, according to a police report.
The resident said that Maribel Ocasio, 31, of Union City, allegedly threw a cup of liquid at him after an argument in the hallway in which the resident asked the people to quiet down, according to police.
When the man called police and followed Ocasio downstairs and near the building’s entrance, William Sanchez, 32, of Union City, allegedly punched the resident in the eye, according to police.
Orcasio and Sanchez were both charged with simple assault, police said.

Fast food fight

Not only is eating fried food late at night unhealthy, but in Hoboken, it could be dangerous.
On Jan. 1 at approximately 2 a.m., police responded to a large fight on the 200 block of Washington Street outside of a fast food restaurant.
A 22-year-old Haledon man was bleeding from his face when police arrived, and was disoriented from a punch that he allegedly received inside the establishment, according to police.
The 22-year-old tried to identify the attacker with police after searching a nearby, large group, but he wasn’t able to do so. The man was transported to Hoboken University Medical Center for treatment. The establishment has surveillance cameras and police are investigating the incident.
