West New York Police Beat

Twenty minutes?

After receiving a tip from what officers termed a reliable source, an apartment on the 6000 block of Broadway Avenue was placed under surveillance as a possible prostitution house. Police said that on Dec. 29 at 5:31 p.m., officers witnessed a 37-year-old man allegedly enter the apartment and exit 20 minutes later.
Officers pursued the man as he drove from the apartment in his Corvette. He was brought into custody for questioning.
Officials then decided to send an undercover officer into the apartment. That officer told police that he was able to make a transaction for sexual favors. A surveillance team was sent in.
A 37-year-old Queens resident and self-employed cleaning lady, Quiroz-Verdugo Teresita, and a 33-year-old unemployed Union City resident, Lopez Luiz, were arrested at the scene. Teresita was charged with prostitution, and Luiz was charged with maintaining a place of prostitution.

Say ‘uncle’

At 6:08 a.m. on Christmas day, 21-year-old Jean Carlo Rodriguez-Amaya was charged by police with driving under the influence and unlawful taking of means of conveyance, according to a police spokesman. The Hawthorne resident was arrested at a location on 59th Street by officer Cesar Carigga after allegedly crashing his uncle’s 2009 gray Toyota wagon into another vehicle and then allegedly fleeing the scene.
Carigga found Rodriguez-Amaya while searching the surrounding area. Carigga returned him to the location of the accident where he was identified as the alleged driver of the wagon, according to the police.
When the officer asked if he had been drinking, Rodriguez-Amaya allegedly responded, “Yes, it’s my birthday and I was celebrating.”
After allegedly failing sobriety tests, Rodriguez-Amaya was brought into headquarters and met by his uncle, who – according to police — said he had not given him permission to take the wagon. The uncle signed a criminal complaint against his nephew, police said.

‘Arrest me’

A 26-year-old West New York resident and bartender, Anyelina Perdodmo, was charged with driving under the influence on Dec. 26 at 5:20 a.m. Officer Robert Cirri responded to a motor vehicle accident call on 52nd Street and found Perdodmo standing outside of her gray 2000 Chevy, which had allegedly just been crashed into several parked vehicles.
According to a police spokesman, as Cirri approached the defendant, she allegedly stated “arrest me!” and admitted to having several glasses of Hennessey after the officer smelled alcohol on her breath.
Perdodmo was placed under arrest without incident.

No iPod for you

At 5 p.m., the day after Christmas, a juvenile arrived at the West New York Police Department to report that his iPod Touch had been stolen. He told officers that while he was standing at the corner of 65th Street and Palisade Avenue, two individuals allegedly distracted him while a third snatched his iPod and “unintentionally” pushed him.
Officers are monitoring the location of the alleged crime to see if they can find and question the three individuals, and perhaps recover the iPod.

Neither rain, nor sleet, nor lack of bike

After attempting to deliver food to the 400 block of 52nd Street, a man entered the West New York Police Department to report that his delivery bicycle had been stolen. He stated that two men in hooded sweatshirts allegedly grabbed the bike and fled east toward Palisades Avenue.
Officer Henry Espin-Zamora later found the abandoned bike and gave it back to a “relieved” delivery man.
Officials were unable to confirm by press time whether the food was delivered.
