Symposia Bookstore offers activities for January and February

Hoboken’s only surviving bookstore, Symposia Community Bookstore at 510 Washington St., has announced this winter’s schedule of activities for those interested in meditation, yoga, and music.

Improve Your Life Through Meditation – Transforming Problems and Conflicts – The Practice of Patient Acceptance
We long for a life without problems. Consequently, we respond to difficulties by becoming angry, resigned or depressed. According to Buddha, the only way to become free from problems is by learning to transform them. We can do so by learning to respond to problems with positive minds such as love, acceptance, compassion and wisdom – the very minds that are the foundation of a joyful and meaningful life. In this course, offered Mondays at 7 p.m., learn simple but effective methods for transforming problems and conflicts into spiritual training.
Jan. 2 Acceptance: The Key to Transforming Problems
Jan. 9 Transforming Painful Feelings
Jan. 16 The Wisdom Solution to Conflict
Jan. 23 Tools for Transforming Conflict 1
Jan. 30 Tools for Transforming Conflict 2
Feb. 6 Letting Go of Jealousy and Rejection
Feb. 13 The Best Way to Relate to Others
Classes are suitable for both beginners and more advanced meditation practitioners, and emphasize how to meditate and practice in our urban environment.
Please note: Classes are given as a series, but can be taken individually. Please feel free to drop in on a class-by-class basis. Classes are held every week unless otherwise stated.
No pre-registration required, and admission is $10 per class.

Symposia is now opening its doors to a totally new environment for yoga practice: small classes, taught in a supportive, non-competitive manner, with lots of individual attention. Students will be gently guided through basic yoga postures, yogic breathing, meditation, and relaxation techniques. Classes are Jan. 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, 25, 31 at 7 p.m. with Certified Yoga Instructor Carmen Rusu. Pre-registration is required by phone, (201) 805-1739 or by email to Carpathian_air@yahoo.com
Also, a Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement Workshop with Suzanne Ausnit is scheduled for Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. Improve the way you sit, stand and move through easy, gentle movements that teach you how to pay attention to how you do what you do. By developing awareness of unnecessary muscular effort, you’ll discover better patterns of movement and discard old ones that contribute to tension and stress. This method is for anyone who wants to expand their capabilities, move with ease and grace, and live to their full potential. It is also ideal for people with injuries, chronic pain and neuromuscular difficulties. Suzanne Ausnit is a Feldenkrais Guild Authorized teacher and a Yoga Alliance Certified teacher, E-RYT 500 level
