A. Funeral services were held Nov. 7 for Alfonso A. Mendez, 83. He passed away Nov. 3. He was born in Fomento, Cuba. Alfonso was a crossing guard for 19 years for Union City before retiring. Alfonso “EL Gallego” Mendez was the husband of Victoria; father of Alfonso D. Mendez (retired lieutenant from the Union City Police), Nellie Grossi, Elena Roper and Danny Mendez; brother of the late Edilio Mendez, Carmen Sanchez, Jaime Mendez and Oneilda De La Cruz; and also a grandfather of 14 grandchildren.
