Results are in: meet your elected officials
Election results are in from Tuesday night. The positions up for grabs on Nov. 8 were county executive, county register, three state Senate seats, all six state Assembly seats, and all nine Board of Freeholder seats.
Democrats maintained their majority in the legislature for the seventh year in a row, and actually increased their foothold in the Assembly to 48-32. The Democrat Senate majority remained 24-16.
Countywide, County Executive Thomas DeGise (D) beat out Stephen M. DeLuca (R) by 81.79 percent with 39,500 votes.
The 33rd District Senate seat, which includes Union City in its jurisdiction, was won by Mayor Brian Stack (D) with 18,244 votes over Beth Hamburger(R), 2,815 votes. The two General Assembly seats were won by Ruben J. Ramos Jr. (D, 15,706 votes) and Sean Connors (D, 15,372 votes) over Fernando Uribe (R, 2,804 votes) and Christopher Garcia (R, 2,896 votes). Democrat Tilo E. Rivas ran unopposed for the 6th Freeholder District position and received 7,642 votes.
The 32nd District Senate seat, which includes West New York in its jurisdiction, was won by Nicholas J. Sacco (D) with 14,136 votes over Edward T. O’Neill (R, 2,668 votes) and independent Herbert H. Shaw (504 votes). The two General Assembly seats were won by Vincent Prieto (D,13,579 votes) and Angelica M. Jimenez (D,13,214 votes) over Ronald F. Tarolla (R, 2,578 votes), Michael J. Bartulovich (R, 2,772 votes) and independent April Tricoli-Busset (407 votes). Democrat Jose C. Munoz ran unopposed for the 7th Freeholder District position and received 3,325 votes.
Union City police captain made acting chief; final decision yet to be announced
In his role as public safety commissioner for Union City, Mayor Brian Stack has named former Police Captain Brian Barrett acting police chief, replacing former Chief Charles Everett, who retired on Oct. 26.
Barrett has not yet been sworn in officially, Stack’s spokesman Mark Albiez said on Tuesday, because the state must grant its approval first. Albiez said they hope to come to a final decision within the next few weeks.
Albiez stated that Barrett lives in town and has a rapport with the community.
Everett retired shortly before a report was released alleging that he manipulated the distribution of off-duty security work that was supposed to give preference to lower-ranking police. Instead, Everett was able to earn thousands of dollars through the work.
PERC accepting donations for Thanksgiving
The Palisades Emergency Residence Corporation requests donations of non-perishables and paper goods for the upcoming holiday season and for Thanksgiving.
They will also hold a multicultural public Thanksgiving dinner for those who are hungry on Wed., Nov. 23 at 6 p.m. at the soup kitchen located on 111 37th St. in Union City. They anticipate the attendance of over 200 people, so donations and volunteers are vital.

17,000 turkeys to be handed out in Union City
On Sat., Nov. 19, the Brian Stack Civic Association will be package and distribute 17,000 turkeys, throughout the neighborhood beginning at 9 a.m. The Civic Association can be reached at 201-348-8338.
Thanksgiving food drive, celebrations at local schools
St. Joseph of the Palisades will hold a food drive for the upcoming holiday season. They are in need of canned, nonperishable items and baby food. They will be giving out food for those in need on Sat., Nov. 19. To donate or participate in the give-away, one may go to their location on 6401 Palisade Ave. or call (201) 854-7006 for more information.
Also, there will be a Thanksgiving celebration held on Sat., Nov. 19 at 11 a.m. at the West New York Middle School located on 57th St. and Broadway. Admission is free.
Advanced Physical Medicine Center holds Thanksgiving food drive
The Advanced Physical Medicine Center of Fairview has announced the launch of its 19th annual Thanksgiving food drive to benefit the Fairview welfare department. Donations of non-perishable food items will be collected from Tuesday, Nov. 1 through Tuesday, Nov. 15 at the Advanced Physical Medicine Center at 222 Bergen Blvd. in Fairview.
“We urge local residents to contribute whatever they can to this worthy cause by donating non-perishable food including canned and dry goods such as vegetables, soup, instant potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy and stuffing mix,” said Dr. Arber, clinical director of the Advanced Physical Medicine Center. “During these tough economic times, this is one small way to make a big difference in the lives of our neighbors who need it most.”
