UNION CITY — In his role as public safety commissioner for Union City, Mayor Brian Stack has named former Police Captain Brian Barrett acting police chief, replacing former Chief Charles Everett, who retired on Oct. 26.
Barrett has not yet been sworn in officially, Stack’s spokesman Mark Albiez said on Tuesday, because the state must grant its approval first. Albiez said they hope to come to a final decision within the next few weeks.
Albiez stated that Barrett lives in town and has a rapport with the community.
Everett retired shortly before a report was released alleging that he manipulated the distribution of off-duty security work that was supposed to give preference to lower-ranking police. Instead, Everett was able to earn thousands of dollars through the work.
