The Flower Hill Cemetery in North Bergen, located at 5433 Kennedy Blvd., was established in 1850 and is home to hundreds of artistic graves and mausoleums that to this day serve as beautiful tributes to the deceased.
Many of the dead are buried within large mausoleums, some of which are located near the entrance to the cemetery. One of the more noteworthy monuments is the Harms Family Mausoleum, which is in the shape of a giant pyramid. According to the owners, the mausoleum was built by an Egyptian enthusiast and his family. The door has since been cemented over after vandals broke into the tomb.
The cemetery has other walls and monuments to honor the deceased. Many of these monuments are contained within giant indoor mausoleums.
The cemetery is also home to war heroes, including Decatur Dorsey and Frank J. Bart, both recipients of the Medal of Honor for their duty in the Civil War and World War I, respectively. Their listings can be found on findagrave.com.
The roughly 151 victims who perished in the Hoboken Fire of 1900, including crewmen of the SS Saale, are also buried at the cemetery, according to the New York Times.
The accompanying photographs depict many of the artistic tributes to the lives that were put to rest at Flower Hill.
