Park space is better

Dear Editor:
I have been a resident of Weehawken my entire life. For the last 15 years I’ve had the pleasure of living on Highpoint Ave. overlooking the reservoir, which definitely played an important role in the decision to purchase my home. My husband and I have spent many hours on our front porch enjoying the view of this beautiful landmark. No matter what season, this site is something we could look at every day and feel a sense of peace, quiet, and open-aired tranquility.
Over many years I’ve watched the transformations that have taken place in our wonderful hometown. Beautiful changes have taken place from the Waterfront, Park Ave., Blvd. East to the Shades. Kudos to Mayor Turner and our Township Council for making these incredible changes happen.
There has been talk of late of making some drastic revisions to the reservoir outside my home. Suggestions have run from building new town houses, a strip mall and – God help us all! – some type of huge commercial box store, i.e., Costco or the ilk. With local traffic at an all time high in Weehawken, do we really need a huge conglomerate store to make this even worse? Do we need more Dollar stores? Do we need more housing to take over parking spots that are already in short supply? What about costs of hiring extra police, firefighters and teachers?
The possibilities of making walking/biking paths, perhaps a place to fish and maybe even ice skating can only be realized if we go forward with the purchase of this property and build a beautiful park. Let people relax and enjoy the serenity. In my opinion this is a no-brainer! We won’t be sorry!

Sincerely,
Elaine Flood
