Schola Cantorum on Hudson commemorates 9/11

When: Sunday, September 11, 2011, 5:30 pm
Where: First Congregational Church, 40 South Fullerton Avenue, Montclair, NJ
Schola Cantorum on Hudson (SCH) will be offering a special commemoration through music of the events that occurred on September 11, 2001. This commemorative concert will also be performed in New York City at St. John’s in the Village, on September 10 at 8pm.
It has long been clear to the singing membership of SCH that it would be important to remember and commemorate the events of 9/11/2001 on its 10th anniversary. On September 23, 2001, SCH offered a musical context for communal grieving at St. Michael Church in Jersey City, which was then the ensemble’s performing home. The lengthy necrology, contributed by neighbor-commuters and recited over “America the Beautiful” in 2001, will be replaced on this ten-year anniversary by Montclair resident Penny Vance’s sharing of her experience as she looked for her commuting husband. Also included will be Amazing Grace and a setting of the Prayer of St. Francis. The focus will be on healing, even as we continue to remember and honor those lost.
Newly ‘in residence’ in Montclair, the singing membership of SCH is delighted to be joined by ‘Passing Notes’, a self-directed choral group made up of singers from Montclair High School. The event is free, and open to the public.
Immediately following SCH’s thirty-minute offering will be another series of performances and reflections as part of Montclair Remembers in the same space entitled ‘Evening of Hope.’ A candlelight vigil will conclude the evening.
