Spray painting ‘FREE’ won’t set you free
A 25-year-old Union City man was arrested shortly before 1 a.m. on Aug. 30 after he allegedly spray painted the word “FREE” on a building on the 700 block of Monroe Street. He then allegedly led police on a foot chase through midtown, according to police.
Charles Hampton was charged with obstruction of the administration of law and criminal mischief.
Police say they received a report of a male spray painting on the wall of a building on the 700 block of Monroe Street. A tenant of the building said he heard the sound of a spray paint can shaking, and he was able to flag down a nearby officer to alert him, according to a police report.
Hamilton allegedly fled toward a nearby light rail station, and was initially able to elude police, according to a report. However, shortly after, police say they found Hamilton sitting on the 400 block of 9th Street, out of breath and sweating. Police say that when they asked Hamilton why he was spray painting, he responded that he was “practicing.”
Knife attack at Second and Wash
A 21-year-old resident was robbed of $30 at knifepoint near Second and Washington streets on Sunday, Sept. 6 at approximately 2 a.m., police said.
The victim said he left a Washington Street bar and was approached by six black males, all in their 20s, according to the police report.
Four of the men surrounded the victim and backed him up against the wall, according to police. The other males held the victim’s shoulders down and one put a knife to his throat, threatening to kill him, according to a police report. The robbers got away with $30.
Police are investigating.
131 bags of heroin found downtown, police say
Tyrone Miles, 31, of Hoboken was arrested on Aug. 23 at 11 p.m. and charged with a slew of drug charges after police say he allegedly had 131 bags of suspected heroin in his possession.
Police said they saw Miles near the 200 block of Harrison Street and knew he had an open warrant in Clifton. They placed him under arrest.
During the arrest, Miles allegedly said to police, “I got drugs in that bag,” according to a police report.
Police say he wasn’t lying.
Officers said they found a baby bottle containing three “bundles” of heroin. A bundle is a street term for approximately 10 bags of heroin. Police say they also found two “bricks” of heroin. Bricks are known in the drug community as a stack of approximately 50 bags of heroin.
Miles was charged with failure to appear on a warrant, possession of heroin, possession of narcotic paraphernalia, possession of heroin with intent to distribute, possession of heroin within 500 feet of public housing, and possession of heroin within 1,000 feet of a school.
Senior citizen robbed
A 76-year-old Hoboken woman was robbed of $2,100 outside of her apartment on the 400 block of Fifth Street at approximately 8:15 a.m. on Sept. 5, according to a police report.
The woman said that when she exited her apartment, an unknown man pushed her back into her home and told her to give him her purse, according to police.
The man was described as a “chubby” Hispanic male, possibly Puerto Rican, 6-foot-3, clean-shaven, and in his late 20s or early 30s, according to a report.
The man was able to get away with her purse, containing $2,100, according to a report. The incident is under investigation.
Marijuana bust in midtown
A 21-year-old Jersey City man was arrested and charged with a series of drug-related crimes after he allegedly purchased marijuana near Sixth and Adams streets, according to police.
After police received a series of tips about heavy pedestrian traffic from an apartment near the 600 block of Sixth Street, officers set up surveillance around the property. On the afternoon of Sept. 6, police say a grey Jeep, driven by Josimar Sanchez, pulled up to the building. Sanchez then went inside, and a few minutes later, he came back out to his car, according to police.
Police say that while Sanchez was sitting in the vehicle, he was “looking down toward his lap” and “appeared to be manipulating something” in his hands. Believing that a drug transaction just occurred, police followed the car.
After the driver allegedly failed to use a turn signal, police pulled the vehicle over. Police say that they smelled “an extremely strong odor of marijuana” from the car, and eventually found more marijuana, along with a digital scale, according to a police report.
Sanchez was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana within 1,000 feet of a school, possession of marijuana within 500 feet of a public housing complex, possession of narcotic paraphernalia, and as two motor vehicle summonses.
Dog walk turns into scooter fight
A 29-year-old Hoboken woman told police she was assaulted with a scooter while she walked her dog on Sept. 2 at 5:30 p.m. on the 500 block of Grand Street.
The woman said she was walking her 8-year-old beagle, which stopped to relieve itself. During this time, police say the victim observed a 50-60 year old white female, approximately 5-foot-3, with short blond/brown hair and a navy blue skirt, approach on a silver scooter with orange tires. The woman on the scooter allegedly almost hit the dog walker, according to police, which caused an argument between the two.
The victim states that the scooter-rider picked up the scooter and swung it at her, according to police. After two male passers-by intervened, the women stopped fighting.
The woman with the scooter allegedly told the woman with the dog that she was “going to find [her] and kill [her].”
The dog walker went home to call police. Police are investigating.
Purse stolen from bar
A woman said her purse and wallet, valued at approximately $1,800, were stolen from a bar on the 600 block of Grand Street around 12 a.m. on Sept. 5, according to a police report.
The victim said she saw another woman stand by her purse at the bar, but when she turned around to play a game of darts, the purse — and the mysterious woman – were missing.
Inside the purse were a $1,200 wallet, a $400 cell phone, and $175 in cash, along with credit cards, insurance cards, three keys, and $30 in makeup.
Police called the cell phone, and a woman answered, but quickly hung up the phone, according to police.
Police are reviewing surveillance cameras from the area.
