Police warn of phone scam
The Bayonne Police are advising people against falling for a telephone lottery scam that has already victimized several people.
Victims receive a call from outside the United States in which they are encouraged to purchase gift cards from places such as Wal-Mart and send them to a designated address in order to qualify to win a lottery.
Police Capt. Walter Rogers said this is a scam and that people should not send the cards. He said several people have already fallen prey to the trick. For questions about the scam or to report receiving one of these calls, call the Bayonne Police Department at (201) 858-6900.

Help for Jack
For the second year, a fundraiser will be held for Jack Hogan, a second grade student at Lincoln Community School who is suffering from a disease called retinitis pigmentosa, an eye disease causing damage to the retina. The damage gets worse over time. The main sign of the disease is the presence of dark lines in the retina. As the disease gets worse, side (peripheral) vision is gradually lost. The condition may eventually lead to blindness, but usually not complete blindness. Signs and symptoms often first appear in childhood, and severe vision problems develop in early adulthood.
The Jack Hogan Texas Hold-em Poker Tournament will be held on Sept. 23, at 6 p.m. in the Knights of Columbus Hall 669 Avenue C. Buy in for the game is $50 with a $40 voluntary donation to the Jack Hogan Special Needs Trusts, but donations are accepted for those who do not wish to participate in the poker game. There will also be raffles. People can also attend for a $40 donation which will include buffet dinner, beer and soda.
