A funeral mass was offered Aug. 20 at Our Lady of Mercy Church for Joseph J. Morley, 92, a lifelong Jersey City resident who retired in 1993 after 40 years as a fire inspector for the City of Jersey City. He passed away Aug. 16. He was married in 1947 for 42 years to the late Anne (Capasso) Morley. He is survived by his son, Joseph Morley; daughter, Carol Ann Calcagno; daughter-in-law Maria Morley, son-in-law Robert Calcagno: granddaughters, Jessica Morley and Angela Calcagno; his sisters, Eileen Golden and Veronica Corbet; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Mr. Morley founded the Bartholdi Sports and Athletic Club in 1954, where he was a player and manager of the Softball Team. He was founder and secretary of the Joe Morley Bowling League which started in 1959 out of the Cameo Bowling Lanes on Ocean Avenue. By the early 1960s it found its permanent home at Roosevelt Lanes on Route 440, Jersey City, with close to 100 bowlers. The Joe Morley Bowling League contributed to many charities and donated turkeys to needy families at Thanksgiving and Christmas. He was Trustee of the American Bowling Congress, Hudson County Chapter. He retired from the league in 1990, after which he ran many events for his friends, such as golfing outings and tournaments under the Greenville Liars Club at Lambert’s Pub. He marched in every St. Patrick’s Day Parade with various pubs and taverns from its inception in the early ‘60s thru the early ‘90s. He was a parishioner, member of the Holy Name Society and ran bus trips to Atlantic City at Our Lady of Mercy Parish. He was very active in local politics and worked on polls in many elections.
